Why Play Matters More Than Ever

Why Play Matters More Than Ever

At our NYC launch event for Issue 01, the Xbox ROG Ally X testing station became an unexpected calm point in the middle of the party. Guests lined up to try the new device, two fans won their own on our Wheel of Fortune, and it was a small reminder of what gaming often gives people. A moment.

That idea sits at the center of The Culture of Play Report. Xbox and Edelman Data and Intelligence surveyed 1,500 adult players across the United States to understand why gaming feels like time well spent. The answers were consistent. Gaming is meaningful. It builds connection. It lets people express who they are.

Almost 68 percent of players say gaming is more emotionally fulfilling than their other hobbies, and three in four say it feels meaningful. Games ask us to participate and create, so the payoff feels personal.

The connections built through play last too. Six in ten players have made lifelong friends through gaming, and more than half say their communities have supported them during tough moments. On Xbox, 46 percent of players spent the past year gaming together in titles like Call of Duty, Forza Horizon 5, and Fortnite.

Players also value the freedom games offer, even while many appreciate help navigating so many choices. Almost nine in ten find curation useful, and most are open to smarter tools that help them discover what to play next. Xbox is exploring ideas like Gaming Copilot to make that easier while keeping players in control.

Gaming’s influence shows up far beyond the screen. It shapes the stories we watch, the communities we join, and the culture we share. Seventy one percent of players want to pass that creative spark to the next generation.

And at the heart of it all is a single moment that reminds someone why they play. A win, a friendship, a world they never want to leave. As Xbox enters its 25th anniversary year, those moments will continue to guide what comes next, because play has become more than entertainment. It has become part of who we are.
